Novelist 0.3.2 — editable tables and reliable auto-reload

GFM tables are now edited in place, Typora-style: click a cell and type without the table dropping to raw markdown, with hover toolbars and a right-click menu for rows, columns, and alignment. Files edited outside Novelist also reload reliably now, including single-file mode and symlinked folders.

0.3.2 makes two everyday things feel right: tables you can actually edit like a table, and an editor that keeps up with changes made outside it.

Typora-style editable tables

GFM tables now render as a styled table at all times. Click into a cell and you edit it in place — the table keeps its layout instead of collapsing into raw | --- | markdown the moment your cursor enters.

  • Tab / Enter move between cells. Tab past the last cell appends a new row.
  • Hover toolbars on the row and column edges insert or delete rows and columns and set column alignment (left / center / right).
  • A right-click menu offers the same structural actions, plus “Delete table”.
  • Your edits are written straight back to the Markdown source on blur, in clean compact form, so diffs stay small.

CJK input works throughout, and inline formatting (bold, italic, code, strikethrough) renders inside cells.

Files edited outside Novelist now reload reliably

If you edit an open file in another editor — or have an AI coding assistant rewrite it — Novelist now reloads it automatically instead of leaving you to re-open the file by hand.

Two gaps were behind the old “I have to reopen it” behavior, and both are fixed:

  • Single-file mode (a file opened without a project folder) previously started no file watcher at all.
  • Symlinked folders — a project under /tmp, /var, an external drive, or iCloud “Desktop & Documents” — could have their macOS file-system events dropped.

The watcher now follows the real (canonical) path, and a one-second polling fallback reloads any open file as a universal safety net. Saving from inside Novelist never triggers a spurious reload, so your cursor and scroll position stay put.
