Novelist 0.3.1 — drag-to-split multi-panel editing

The editor area goes from a fixed two-pane split to dynamic, resizable columns: drag a file or tab onto a pane's edge to open a new column, up to four, with empty columns collapsing automatically. AI replies now interleave text and tool-use cards in the order they streamed. Also fixes Claude CLI detection on Windows, a Codex large-prompt hang, and WebDAV auto-sync.

0.3.1 upgrades the editor area from a two-pane split into a real multi-panel layout: the number of columns, their widths, and which file each one holds are all things you drag into place.

Drag-to-split multi-panel editing

The editor area is now a set of resizable columns instead of a fixed two-pane split:

  • Drag a file from the sidebar, or a tab, onto a pane’s left / right edge to open it in a new column at that spot.
  • Drag onto a pane’s center to open or move the file into that pane.
  • Reorder tabs within a pane, or drag a tab out to a fresh column.
  • Empty columns collapse automatically, up to four columns.

AI replies interleave text and tool-use in stream order

Assistant replies now render text and tool-use cards in the order they actually streamed: text written before a tool call appears above the card, and text after it below — instead of grouping all the text and then all the cards.

Polish

  • Overlay auto-hiding scrollbars. Scrollbars are now thin, rounded, themed, and transparent at rest — they fade in only while you hover a scroll area or are actively scrolling, so the writing surface stays clean.
  • The sidebar collapse handle is hidden until you hover the sidebar edge.

Fixes

  • Claude CLI detection on Windows. Installations via volta / fnm / asdf / bun / nvm / npm-global / Homebrew were missed because the candidate paths looked for claude instead of claude.exe.
  • AI Agent (Codex): a large prompt could hang the turn. The Codex backend now reads stdout while writing the prompt to stdin, avoiding a pipe deadlock.
  • Themed HTML export and the move-file palette work on Windows (no more hardcoded /tmp; folder paths use a separator-agnostic dirname).
  • AI panel shortcuts (new session / save chat) fire again while typing in the composer.
  • WebDAV auto-sync starts correctly after a project is opened or switched.
  • File watcher no longer stalls the runtime while hashing large changed files, and bounds the buffered size of AI HTTP responses.
